On this episode of the Creator Spotlight Series, we’re excited to break bread with the lovely Kayla Mann from Cake & Caviar / Habitat Life. Kayla’s been working behind the scenes with some of the industries’ best cannabis companies, making a positive impact on any project she’s involved with. Her passion and love for cannabis is undeniable, and we can’t wait for you to get to know her a bit more.

Introduce yourself and what do you do?

Kayla Mann, I am a Chartered Accountant by trade and the Chief Finance and Revenue Officer at Cake & Caviar/Habitat Life Sciences.

Can you share any turning points in your career or particular moments of success?
From legacy, to craft (micro), to Valens and back to craft, I feel like there’s been a lot of them.

Getting A1 (Summit and Basecamp) beverages signed at Valens is one of my favorite moments. Everett Knight at The Valens Company and I worked really hard with the A1 team in Toronto to bring those together and to see so many flavors and evrey store stocking them saying people love them is a really good feeling.

At Habitat, getting the salmon operations commercially certified and selling the. salmon to the local community (retailers and restaurants) was another beautiful moment. Nourishing our communities, while fostering the land and water around us, and getting people high is the best.

Now, I get these recurring moments of success on the road for sales getting to tell folks about our farm and how it works.
Describe your cannabis use in 3 words.

The Problem Solver.

Describe the impact Cannabis has had on your life?

Cannabis helped me find my place. In work. In life. I’ve lost myself in many careers and many chapters, and cannabis brought me back to me.

Where and when were you introduced to cannabis for the first time?

Cannabis was very prevalent in the skateboard and snow sports industries of which were my life growing up so I was introduced to it at a very young age.

“Cannabis helped me find my place. In work. In life. I’ve lost myself in many careers and many chapters, and cannabis brought me back to me. “

What’s your favourite post-smoke activity? Workout? Food?

Eat, create and/or learn. I’m usually smoking at the end of my work day to relax, process and enjoy my downtime to fullest since I don’t get a lot of it. Cannabis has a way of reminding me what matters, to appreciate things and to be present.

If you could sesh with one person dead or alive, who would it be?

Sue Kwon, she’s my favorite rap photographer (living legend), I have all her books, I used to print out all her photos off google as a kid (sorry, Sue, no copyright infringement intended) and post them all over my walls with rap lyrics.

What music do you vibe to when using Cannabis?

Depends on mood! But mostly rap, hiphop, r&b.

“Eat, create and/or learn. I’m usually smoking at the end of my work day to relax, process and enjoy my downtime to fullest since I don’t get a lot of it. Cannabis has a way of reminding me what matters, to appreciate things and to be present. “

What are your favourite ways to consume cannabis (joints, vapes, edibles, beverages etc.) and why?

Joints and beverages (emulsified) and infused meals. The beverages are my favorite summer drinking substitute.

Is there anything interesting that you’d like to share with the Choklit Park community? (feel free to share any important projects or exciting news you’d like our community to know!)

I’m very excited to be BC Craft Co-Op’s newest board member. This Co-op is doing amazing things for our cannabis community and I’m looking forward to working with the amazing team there to propel our industry forward with community events (BC Craft Summit, etc), regulatory input and more. (Formal appointment is this fall, officially. So I hope to have everyone’s support!)
